Welcome to the pulse of car culture, where the roar of engines and the sizzle of Tex-Mex unite under the Texas sun at the Tailpipes & Tacos Cruise In! This isn't just any car show; it's a vibrant celebration of chrome and cuisine where we chat with enthusiasts like Jimmy Nichols, whose '55 Chevy isn't just a car but a storied member of his family. Get revved up as we award the coveted Chili Pepper trophies and fuel the spirit of giving with every taco devoured in support of God's Garage. It's all about the classics, the camaraderie, and the heartwarming tales of restoration and resilience that spin from the wheels of history.

Strap in as we shift gears to crucial conversations with Sergeant Stephen Woodard from the Department of Public Safety, steering us through the sizzling topics of car and motorcycle safety. He shines a light on the life-or-death importance of not leaving kids or pets in hot cars and joins us on the front lines to promote vigilance and share preventive measures. Our journey continues with a ride into the future, where we explore the intersection of motorcycle safety, technology, and the evolving relationship between drivers and bikers. Plus, we'll peek under the hood of self-driving tech skepticism and tackle the very real roadblocks faced by electric vehicle owners today. It's an episode packed with horsepower and heart, where every story revs with insight and every mile traveled is a testament to the bonds that tie us to the road, and to each other.

00:00:01.762 --> 00:00:10.515
Welcome to another In Wheel Time podcast, a 30-minute mini version of the In Wheel Time Car Show that airs live every Saturday morning 8 to 11 am Central.

00:00:10.515 --> 00:00:21.091
Hey, hey you got us, you got us.

00:00:21.091 --> 00:00:26.481
You're on the In Wheel Time Car Talk Show at today's long overdue Tail.

00:00:26.481 --> 00:00:31.521
Plants and Tacos Cruise Inn at the Loopy Tortilla Tex-Mex in Katy, Texas, Just ahead.

00:00:31.521 --> 00:00:38.128
We pull another guest from those in attendance here today and we'll have the stories-making automotive news headlines this week.

00:00:38.128 --> 00:00:41.048
Howdy Along with Mike out of this world, Mars.

00:00:41.048 --> 00:00:42.764
We always need more.

00:00:42.823 --> 00:00:43.386
Jeff Zekin we do.

00:00:43.445 --> 00:00:47.335
And, ladies and gentlemen, back here behind me, the ever popular, famous the man.

00:00:47.335 --> 00:00:51.406
Yeah, man, that is actually close to Ma Bell.

00:00:52.079 --> 00:00:52.360
Yeah.

00:00:52.462 --> 00:00:55.848
It's David Ainsley.

00:00:55.848 --> 00:00:59.009
I'm Don Armstrong, glad you could join us on this Saturday.

00:00:59.009 --> 00:01:03.345
We have another guest in the studio, in our remote studio here.

00:01:03.345 --> 00:01:09.331
By the way, before we get to that, I did want to tell you we've got another hour and a half left of the show.

00:01:09.331 --> 00:01:34.730
We're midway through, so there's plenty of time to get here, and the way to do that is I-10, the Katy Freeway, with it coming from the west to the east, exit the Feeder Road to 99, the Grand Parkway, come down to Kingsland Boulevard One word, kingsland and we're right here at the corner of Kingsland and the Grand Parkway.

00:01:35.340 --> 00:01:41.623
And if you're coming from Sugar Land, rosenberg, richmond, you know Point South McAllen, just come on up.

00:01:41.683 --> 00:01:43.347
99 and it's at the Kingsland exit, yeah Okay.

00:01:43.367 --> 00:01:45.715
All right, I at the Kingsland exit, yeah Okay.

00:01:46.599 --> 00:01:46.819
All right.

00:01:46.819 --> 00:02:03.478
I guess the way I came and by the way, for those that are here that pay any kind of attention whatsoever or care, the trophies, the Chili Pepper trophies for the three categories of cars, and I have them written down here because I can't remember.

00:02:04.042 --> 00:02:05.868
I think it was the next page before that.

00:02:05.868 --> 00:02:07.087
Is it this one here?

00:02:07.087 --> 00:02:07.429
Yep.

00:02:07.881 --> 00:02:13.032
The three categories are Best Classic, Best Hot Rod and Best Modern Classic.

00:02:13.032 --> 00:02:20.353
So one of those trophies is going to go to one in those three categories of cars and we're going to give.

00:02:20.353 --> 00:02:25.191
There's a bunch of cars, yeah, we're going to announce those coming up here in the next 30 minutes.

00:02:25.191 --> 00:02:34.729
So in 30 minutes we're going to be giving away the Chili Pepper trophies, because that's kind of about the time to do that and it's an honor.

00:02:35.441 --> 00:02:37.027
You've got a lot of camaraderie.

00:02:37.027 --> 00:02:38.727
You've got guys that have won it before.

00:02:39.320 --> 00:02:44.449
And people that you absolutely can't stand, and you've run into them here and you're trying to avoid them and get out of here.

00:02:48.580 --> 00:02:49.215
Yeah, absolutely can't stand.

00:02:49.215 --> 00:02:49.915
And you've run into them here and you're trying to avoid them and get out of here.

00:02:49.915 --> 00:02:50.693
Yeah, yeah, but the good news is there's enough cars here that you could do that.

00:02:50.617 --> 00:02:51.890
How many cars you've been out walking around, how many cars you think are here and I don't know they're?

00:02:51.890 --> 00:02:52.897
They're the next parking lot.

00:02:52.897 --> 00:02:55.606
The restaurant next door is full too uh-huh over at the american.

00:02:55.627 --> 00:02:57.262
So yes, and they're out on the street.

00:02:57.401 --> 00:03:01.230
I mean it's 200 I don't know, I'm not a good counter.

00:03:01.230 --> 00:03:02.152
What do you think?

00:03:02.152 --> 00:03:03.355
We know that You've been around.

00:03:04.859 --> 00:03:06.544
Oh really, he didn't turn his microphone on.

00:03:06.544 --> 00:03:07.247
Say that again.

00:03:07.266 --> 00:03:08.270
What did you?

00:03:08.270 --> 00:03:12.669
Say I said there's probably about 250 here somewhere there it's an event.

00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:17.810
Everybody's been dying for tailpipes and tacos.

00:03:17.810 --> 00:03:21.090
We've been asked about it on every remote that we've been to.

00:03:21.090 --> 00:03:24.555
I said, hey, not up to us, we'll be there, we'll promote it.

00:03:24.574 --> 00:03:38.432
You bet, I was here two years ago and I think there was maybe 30, 40 cars here, so this is we're back women I'm here but, what is the premise of this car show, don well the premise of the car show is the camaraderie.

00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:45.365
bring out your car, visit with friends and neighbors that you haven't sent for a while and, uh, you know, god's garage.

00:03:45.365 --> 00:03:49.413
All of this this benefits God's Garage because the tacos are free.

00:03:49.413 --> 00:03:53.031
Go in and make a donation of any size, get a free taco.

00:03:53.031 --> 00:04:01.551
They've also the same thing out at the God's Garage booth out there, and it's a good time, good food, good camaraderie.

00:04:01.551 --> 00:04:02.905
So that's what it's all about.

00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:04.461
Exactly, food, good camaraderie.

00:04:04.461 --> 00:04:05.042
So that's what it's all about, exactly.

00:04:05.042 --> 00:04:06.122
And if you're, if you're not, into tacos, they do have.

00:04:06.122 --> 00:04:09.169
Uh, you got your sodas and your your, uh.

00:04:09.169 --> 00:04:11.092
Other beverages, yeah, other beverages.

00:04:11.092 --> 00:04:14.948
They do have some adult beverages here, so bring it on.

00:04:15.207 --> 00:04:17.031
The Sheila Mae Murray family is here.

00:04:17.031 --> 00:04:19.081
I see is mama here.

00:04:19.081 --> 00:04:22.286
She's there right behind the guy in the red shirt.

00:04:22.286 --> 00:04:24.350
So anyway, oh there.

00:04:24.350 --> 00:04:25.992
Yeah, you can see her back there.

00:04:26.072 --> 00:04:26.752
Yeah, I see her now.

00:04:27.134 --> 00:04:30.848
Hi Mama, it's good to see you, so everybody's come out to support this.

00:04:31.220 --> 00:04:34.509
Yeah, including Jimmy Nichols here with his 55 210.

00:04:34.528 --> 00:04:35.129
She's waving at you.

00:04:35.129 --> 00:04:35.851
Don Blow her kisses.

00:04:40.321 --> 00:04:40.863
It's all yours, Mark.

00:04:40.863 --> 00:04:47.833
So Jimmy Nichols, here he's got his 55 210, which is a two-door post car.

00:04:53.762 --> 00:04:59.235
And he's got a pretty cool story about this car that he's had, for I bought it in 1966 for $85.

00:04:59.257 --> 00:05:02.565
Oh man, you got ripped off, I'm just saying Slide up a little bit, let Don get by there.

00:05:02.565 --> 00:05:08.807
I'm kidding and your dreams, so tell us about the car.

00:05:08.807 --> 00:05:10.225
So you bought it in 66.

00:05:10.225 --> 00:05:14.326
Right, and you were telling me a little bit earlier how it was.

00:05:14.326 --> 00:05:15.831
Kind of a unique transaction.

00:05:16.199 --> 00:05:20.492
Well, like I said, it was sitting in really a salvage yard.

00:05:20.492 --> 00:05:22.425
The guy had two of them.

00:05:22.425 --> 00:05:24.588
I used to drive by them every day going to work.

00:05:24.588 --> 00:05:25.451
I worked for the railroad back then them.

00:05:25.451 --> 00:05:26.196
I used to drive by them every day.

00:05:26.196 --> 00:05:26.980
I worked for the railroad back then.

00:05:26.980 --> 00:05:29.307
I used to drive by them every day.

00:05:29.307 --> 00:05:32.108
Then one day I went by and one of them was gone.

00:05:32.300 --> 00:05:36.904
So, I stopped in and I said how much do you want for that 55 Chevrolet?

00:05:36.904 --> 00:05:42.970
And the guy said I was surprised that he even gave me a price because he had already sold the bumpers and it didn't have a motor.

00:05:45.180 --> 00:05:46.879
I probably sold them to the other guy that bought the other one.

00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:49.026
I was surprised that he even gave me a price.

00:05:49.026 --> 00:05:50.432
But he said $85.

00:05:50.432 --> 00:05:55.108
And I said, okay, and I had $30 on me at the time.

00:05:55.108 --> 00:06:01.228
I was working for the railroad, making $1.46 an hour, and so I said, well, here's $30.

00:06:01.228 --> 00:06:25.374
I said I'll be back tomorrow, and so I bought the car, drug it home, put some tires and wheels on it, put a motor in it that I had and drove it for three years, and then I was still young and dumb enough that I took it all apart and then the body was actually dipped in a tank at one time and stripped.

00:06:26.199 --> 00:06:27.043
Oh okay, but anyway.

00:06:27.043 --> 00:06:29.490
So time went by.

00:06:29.490 --> 00:06:45.127
Like I said, I drove it for three years, took it apart, hauled it around for approximately 46 years, I guess, from here to here it never set outside nowhere, but anyway started working on it a little bit.

00:06:45.127 --> 00:06:49.209
Didn't work on it, I was working for myself basically.

00:06:50.379 --> 00:07:04.514
And so you know, after getting my two boys through A&M for 12 years in the last, there's a picture of it right there that I took in September of 2017.

00:07:04.514 --> 00:07:06.538
And you can see what it looked like.

00:07:06.538 --> 00:07:11.576
It was on a, on a turntable type deal history history with.

00:07:11.576 --> 00:07:23.206
It's totally just like you see it and of course that's a picture when it was in 1966, sitting in my mom, you got away when I first bought it and the's the $85 car.

00:07:23.206 --> 00:07:31.019
Yeah, so anyway, I've managed to finally get it back together since 2017.

00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:32.365
I'll give you $100 for it right now.

00:07:32.365 --> 00:07:34.925
You got it on you.

00:07:34.925 --> 00:07:37.285
I'll give you $30 now and.

00:07:37.305 --> 00:07:42.889
I'll come back tomorrow, so you've got one picture there with the three kids in the back.

00:07:42.889 --> 00:07:44.286
Yeah, that's my grandkids.

00:07:45.721 --> 00:07:46.887
They like to get in the trunk.

00:07:46.927 --> 00:07:47.449
They enjoy it.

00:07:47.470 --> 00:07:48.956
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

00:07:48.956 --> 00:07:49.800
That's the first thing they do.

00:07:49.800 --> 00:07:53.430
They jump in the back seat, roll the windows down and everything.

00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:54.904
They have window cranks.

00:07:54.904 --> 00:08:09.663
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, they're just playing with them yeah, but yeah, these shows are.

00:08:09.684 --> 00:08:12.392
you know, like I said, I've met so many people over the last three years since I've been driving.

00:08:12.392 --> 00:08:14.139
I've been driving my car about the last two or three years.

00:08:14.139 --> 00:08:19.899
Basically it's all about the camaraderie and the people you meet.

00:08:19.899 --> 00:08:27.593
We go around and we look at cars a little bit, but we're usually just sitting around and people you meet stories you tell, I tell people I bought my car for $85, and they look at it and they're like what?

00:08:27.593 --> 00:08:29.959
So it kind of gets the conversation going.

00:08:30.440 --> 00:08:33.390
So you've been to Loopy Tortillas before all these events.

00:08:33.390 --> 00:08:35.005
What other car shows do you go to?

00:08:35.759 --> 00:08:42.532
I go to the Nifty Fifties and then we've got a little car club up in Willis Texas.

00:08:45.881 --> 00:08:48.389
We talk about them occasionally Cruisers, yep and the Cruisers.

00:08:50.003 --> 00:08:54.153
And so I meet up there on usually Sunday evenings and hang out.

00:08:54.153 --> 00:08:56.345
But I've got a lot of friends.

00:08:56.345 --> 00:09:07.687
I met with cars, sonny Bennett, ella Paintbody we hang out a lot together Michael Brown and different ones, joe Reyes.

00:09:07.928 --> 00:09:08.591
Now we go to one.

00:09:08.591 --> 00:09:13.412
The first Sunday of every month is over at the Avalon Diner down in Stafford area.

00:09:13.412 --> 00:09:18.806
Craig Bierman has Chrome and Coffee and it's much like this.

00:09:18.806 --> 00:09:23.030
It's a little bit smaller scale but it's the same event.

00:09:23.030 --> 00:09:25.894
Go in and have breakfast, know breakfast.

00:09:25.894 --> 00:09:28.566
At the avalon diner you get the camaraderie, you get the networking.

00:09:28.566 --> 00:09:33.686
Guys like you out there, uh, we don't broadcast from there, but we go out there and support craig.

00:09:34.248 --> 00:09:46.635
Uh, so check that one out too well, I'm always at the one at san leon there you go do, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah I've been to it two or three different times woody's a great guy, and and there's, you know, same thing.

00:09:46.635 --> 00:09:51.410
Kind of a unique venue Really it is a unique venue right there on the water and stuff.

00:09:51.410 --> 00:09:59.586
You almost have to know where it's at unless you're familiar with the waterways or whatever down at East.

00:09:59.647 --> 00:10:00.649
Bay, or whatever they call it.

00:10:00.668 --> 00:10:02.493
Galveston Bay and stuff.

00:10:02.493 --> 00:10:05.629
So yeah, it's cool.

00:10:06.081 --> 00:10:10.145
One of the things I was noticing and we were talking about it earlier was the engine that you've got in there.

00:10:10.145 --> 00:10:15.499
It is a Chevy 350, but it's kind of a special Chevy 350.

00:10:15.519 --> 00:10:16.501
Right, chevrolet.

00:10:16.501 --> 00:10:36.773
They were promoting some aluminum heads that they designed and they actually put them on a 350 engine of some sort, raced it in a 12-hour endurance race, and so to promote their heads they had a team of guys take 430.

00:10:36.773 --> 00:10:58.321
Obviously they didn't make 430 horsepower put the heads on these engines, and so I saw it on the front cover of their performance catalog one day Right, and so I inquired about it and the first thing a guy told me was that a dealership at Monday Chevrolet he's like.

00:10:58.321 --> 00:11:01.289
The first words out of his mouth was well, you can't get one.

00:11:01.289 --> 00:11:04.981
That's bad news for me, but anyway.

00:11:04.981 --> 00:11:20.509
So I started kind of researching a little bit, found out that all the dealers across the nation that sold the most performance parts from Chevrolet were going to get allotted a motor or two or whatever.

00:11:20.529 --> 00:11:20.889
Right right.

00:11:20.909 --> 00:11:21.932
There was an allotment.

00:11:22.541 --> 00:11:29.446
And the guy at West Point Buick was big time in the race and sold a lot of performance parts for Chevrolet, found out they were going to get six.

00:11:29.768 --> 00:11:32.649
Oh, wow, and I had a friend of mine that bought a lot of fleet vehicles over there.

00:11:32.649 --> 00:11:33.946
So I contacted him.

00:11:33.946 --> 00:11:37.068
He called him and said sure enough, we're going to get six.

00:11:37.068 --> 00:11:41.865
Four of them are already sold, and so me and him ended up buying the other one.

00:11:41.865 --> 00:11:44.048
So I carried him $1,000.

00:11:44.048 --> 00:11:50.855
He went and paid a deposit on them and then in April 30th of 96, I went and picked them up.

00:11:52.580 --> 00:11:54.087
You know what the whole story is on this.

00:11:54.087 --> 00:11:55.898
It's like the bottom line is it's all who you know.

00:11:55.918 --> 00:12:01.548
Sometimes, Well in this case, obviously Right, because it ended up number 19 out of 430.

00:12:01.548 --> 00:12:04.402
So, he got a pretty low number as far as that goes.

00:12:04.442 --> 00:12:07.344
Well, there was people back when they came out.

00:12:07.344 --> 00:12:10.547
They were wanting particular numbers for a particular year car.

00:12:10.547 --> 00:12:19.734
Or like the number three motor probably never left Detroit because of Delray Hart, I have no idea, but anyway, that's.

00:12:19.734 --> 00:12:23.155
You know I didn't pick the number, it's just what they got and what they got it.

00:12:23.155 --> 00:12:27.807
And so, yeah, it's just what they got and what they got it.

00:12:27.807 --> 00:12:44.451
So, yeah, that's pretty cool, but yeah, like I said, finally got it together and after 40-something years, it's pretty enjoyable to be able to drive it down the road, my son has a 50 fleet line that he did some work on.

00:12:44.551 --> 00:12:45.232
It's registered.

00:12:45.232 --> 00:12:46.644
He just wants to give it away.

00:12:46.644 --> 00:12:50.928
I've got pictures of it, so after the show I'll bring it to you.

00:12:50.928 --> 00:12:51.811
I'll show you the pictures.

00:12:51.811 --> 00:12:53.145
He's got all the listings of what it is.

00:12:53.145 --> 00:12:54.804
He said if somebody comes and gets it they can have it.

00:12:55.086 --> 00:12:55.970
He wants to give it away.

00:12:55.970 --> 00:12:58.245
My wife wanted to sell mine at one point.

00:12:58.245 --> 00:12:58.869
It doesn't run.

00:12:59.909 --> 00:13:01.331
The motor cranks but it doesn't start.

00:13:01.331 --> 00:13:02.932
It's under construction.

00:13:02.932 --> 00:13:04.794
I'll show you pictures of it.

00:13:05.254 --> 00:13:06.856
See, that gets my interest right away.

00:13:06.856 --> 00:13:10.250
I'm 76 years old yesterday.

00:13:10.399 --> 00:13:11.886
I would have never guessed you were that old.

00:13:12.100 --> 00:13:21.291
I thought 75 at the most, I wouldn't even think about trying to build another car, although I got a Dodge Super B I'm trying to fix and whatever.

00:13:21.291 --> 00:13:23.846
It just goes on and on and on, it never stops.

00:13:23.846 --> 00:13:31.543
But my wife wanted me to sell this at one point and she thought well, we could sell it for about $1,000.

00:13:31.543 --> 00:13:32.587
I said well, you know what?

00:13:32.587 --> 00:13:35.389
That car's been around a whole lot longer than you.

00:13:35.389 --> 00:13:38.109
It don't cost me near as much money.

00:13:40.702 --> 00:13:41.633
You're still married.

00:13:41.653 --> 00:13:45.128
I'm still married 42 years To that woman To that same woman.

00:13:45.128 --> 00:13:46.130
Oh, yeah, okay.

00:13:47.442 --> 00:13:48.024
Are you back here?

00:13:48.346 --> 00:13:51.208
Yes, Okay, I'll show you, it's really cool.

00:13:51.208 --> 00:13:53.027
Don't leave without seeing him, yeah.

00:13:53.860 --> 00:13:55.386
I won't leave without seeing you, okay.

00:13:56.168 --> 00:13:58.105
Yeah, I think it's out there on the back.

00:14:01.726 --> 00:14:03.471
If you don't want to do.

00:14:03.490 --> 00:14:04.172
It's great talking to you.

00:14:04.172 --> 00:14:05.274
Thank you so much for stopping by.

00:14:05.274 --> 00:14:10.490
Gave me a chance to get a little break and get up, and my back is killing me, right, it's all good.

00:14:11.052 --> 00:14:13.692
Wine, wine If nothing else.

00:14:13.711 --> 00:14:17.607
you're the back saver this morning, the most enjoyable deal is the people you meet.

00:14:17.807 --> 00:14:18.990
Exactly, and stuff.

00:14:19.480 --> 00:14:20.682
Lots of people out here today.

00:14:20.682 --> 00:14:25.232
Yes, I out here today, yes, I'm telling stories with people, and this, that and the other.

00:14:25.232 --> 00:14:27.782
It's always enjoyable.

00:14:27.782 --> 00:14:28.943
That's what we do this for.

00:14:29.183 --> 00:14:33.051
Yeah, absolutely Glad to participate.

00:14:33.051 --> 00:14:33.812
Thank you so much.

00:14:33.812 --> 00:14:34.614
We appreciate you.

00:17:25.153 --> 00:17:32.938
You're not going to believe who just showed up, ladies and gentlemen, sergeant Stephen Woodard from the Department of Public Safety.

00:17:32.938 --> 00:17:35.012
He is here in the house with us.

00:17:35.305 --> 00:17:37.376
We never get to see him in person.

00:17:37.376 --> 00:17:40.451
This is a car guy Well, you do when he puts you in the cell.

00:17:40.451 --> 00:17:41.173
There's that.

00:17:41.173 --> 00:17:43.271
He hasn't done that lately, I don't think.

00:17:43.925 --> 00:17:46.288
We know, him better than anybody else.

00:17:46.288 --> 00:17:54.441
So he's going to sit down and he is going to join us now, and we're just going to have to postpone the cruise-in calendar for a little while, just a moment.

00:17:54.441 --> 00:17:55.709
Steven Woodard.

00:17:55.709 --> 00:17:59.753
Oh my gosh, look, you even shaved this morning before you came out.

00:17:59.753 --> 00:18:04.412
Well, actually I didn't, that's one thing about you, you got my back all the time.

00:18:04.964 --> 00:18:05.205
Hey.

00:18:05.205 --> 00:18:06.468
So I'll tell you something interesting.

00:18:06.468 --> 00:18:07.390
We've been going up.

00:18:07.390 --> 00:18:11.638
I looked at the first time I was on air on the show.

00:18:11.638 --> 00:18:14.672
You probably don't remember, but do you know how long it's been?

00:18:14.672 --> 00:18:16.836
Oh, shoot, let's see.

00:18:17.125 --> 00:18:18.723
It's been 13 years of the show.

00:18:19.445 --> 00:18:25.635
It's been at least 12 years you brought me on nine years ago, nine, and I appreciate that.

00:18:25.635 --> 00:18:28.814
I appreciate it I know, allowing us to share our little message.

00:18:28.814 --> 00:18:36.511
So if you go to the back of the grounds, I have my patrol car set up and I have a heat index meter out there.

00:18:36.511 --> 00:18:38.657
Okay, Go back around the corner, here, back around the corner.

00:18:38.657 --> 00:18:44.377
It shows you the temperature of the inside of the vehicle and the ambient temperature.

00:18:44.484 --> 00:18:46.086
I'm just reminding everybody, it's hot as hell, yeah, yeah.

00:18:46.086 --> 00:18:46.665
And the ambient temperature.

00:18:46.665 --> 00:18:48.807
I'm just reminding everybody, it's hot as hell out here, but I just set it up.

00:18:49.268 --> 00:18:52.808
Right now the interior of the vehicle is already at 90 degrees.

00:18:52.868 --> 00:18:54.450
Wow, and you just got here.

00:18:54.809 --> 00:19:12.519
I just got here and it's 10 degrees higher than outside, so we're going around the state reminding folks, especially through the Heat Stroke Task Force, to look, be mindful of leaving your pets, and I don't know how in the world people leave their children in a vehicle.

00:19:12.519 --> 00:19:16.040
I don't either, but we're going across the state reminding folks that.

00:19:16.060 --> 00:19:19.002
Yeah, because summer's here, you think yeah.

00:19:22.006 --> 00:19:24.257
One guy said man why, do you have that tie on?

00:19:24.257 --> 00:19:25.805
Well, I got to dress up when I'm in real time.

00:19:26.686 --> 00:19:27.931
Do you have your vest on?

00:19:27.931 --> 00:19:28.773
I do always.

00:19:28.773 --> 00:19:31.473
I mean, oh my God, man, look man.

00:19:31.884 --> 00:19:34.913
Look, I'm too good to get shot at Trouble.

00:19:34.913 --> 00:19:39.696
Yeah, yeah, yeah so yeah, but again we're going around the state.

00:19:39.696 --> 00:19:40.909
I'm on a PSA.

00:19:40.909 --> 00:19:42.406
I've got to send that to you guys.

00:19:42.406 --> 00:19:44.049
We're just reminding folks.

00:19:44.049 --> 00:19:45.231
Take a look at the back seat.

00:19:45.251 --> 00:19:49.479
Whatever you send us, we'll put it on the internet, and we did a segment not very long ago about that as well.

00:19:49.479 --> 00:19:53.652
Thank you, Memorial Day.

00:19:53.692 --> 00:20:00.958
What do you think, Starting off so far so good, just did a segment on high-speed traffic deaths between 80 and 100.

00:20:01.385 --> 00:20:02.329
There's 50 states.

00:20:02.390 --> 00:20:02.952
It's interesting.

00:20:02.952 --> 00:20:06.681
I will tell you, boys, galveston is packed, everybody's out and about.

00:20:06.681 --> 00:20:08.546
I will tell you, boys, galveston is packed, everybody's out and about.

00:20:08.546 --> 00:20:13.692
I'll tell you, going up to right now, I-10 is pretty packed.

00:20:13.692 --> 00:20:17.316
Going to San Antonio people are out, they're getting ready to enjoy the weekend.

00:20:17.316 --> 00:20:18.538
And we appreciate that.

00:20:18.538 --> 00:20:19.878
But we just want you to do it safe.

00:20:19.878 --> 00:20:21.981
So obviously no drinking and driving.

00:20:27.184 --> 00:20:28.934
Wear your seatbelt because that's the most important feature as he drinks a Bloody Mary.

00:20:28.954 --> 00:20:29.277
That's the most.

00:20:29.277 --> 00:20:29.700
So we've got drivers.

00:20:29.700 --> 00:20:30.585
Don't worry, buddy, we've got a driver.

00:20:30.585 --> 00:20:32.269
Hey, buddy, I live right down the street.

00:20:32.269 --> 00:20:34.394
As soon as I'm done with this show, I'm coming to your house.

00:20:34.414 --> 00:20:37.269
Yeah, that's fine, Be mindful of that.

00:20:37.269 --> 00:20:39.713
The most important feature in the vehicle is the seatbelt.

00:20:39.713 --> 00:20:41.590
Someone may say the tires.

00:20:41.590 --> 00:20:51.720
I mean, yeah, here in this state the seat belt violations are starting to go up for whatever reason.

00:20:51.740 --> 00:20:52.961
And Steve, what is that about?

00:20:52.961 --> 00:20:53.862
I don't get that.

00:20:53.981 --> 00:20:56.230
I don't know, I don't know I can pull you to stats.

00:20:56.230 --> 00:20:57.086
I mean, I don't know.

00:20:57.266 --> 00:21:07.960
Is it because not only your department but other police departments have so many other things to do crime-related that the traffic is maybe down a notch?

00:21:08.039 --> 00:21:09.727
Perhaps I don't know, kick it down.

00:21:09.747 --> 00:21:11.909
We're not at the top two, but maybe the top four.

00:21:12.309 --> 00:21:24.914
I have to ask you this question which, I'll admit it, I got a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt once upon a time, a hundred years ago down in Presidio, texas, at the only the officer was there one day a month.

00:21:24.914 --> 00:21:34.164
Yeah, okay, but I've also know some people that got arrested recently for not wearing a seatbelt and I never heard of that.

00:21:34.265 --> 00:21:35.605
Well, there's something else going on besides that?

00:21:35.605 --> 00:21:38.952
Well, that's kind of what I thought I didn't know, yeah.

00:21:39.326 --> 00:21:40.570
There's something else going on.

00:21:40.570 --> 00:21:44.705
We don't put folks in jail for not wearing a seatbelt.

00:21:44.726 --> 00:21:45.567
There's something else going on.

00:21:45.567 --> 00:21:47.928
All right, that's good enough, because it's kind of what I thought.

00:21:47.948 --> 00:21:49.929
Don Armstrong, that's enough to get you in jail.

00:21:49.929 --> 00:21:53.210
Well, yeah, that's automatic yeah automatic.

00:21:53.309 --> 00:21:59.833
Well, I will tell you, the fatal numbers here in the state are pretty interesting.

00:21:59.833 --> 00:22:10.076
They're a little higher than last year as of today, but what I can present to you guys is we're going across the state also just campaigning for motorcycle awareness.

00:22:10.076 --> 00:22:14.159
We've got a lot of four-wheelers out here, but watch out, please watch out for our two-wheelers.

00:22:14.159 --> 00:22:20.402
I mean, this is Motorcycle Awareness Month and TxDOT has a campaign called Look Twice.

00:22:20.402 --> 00:22:21.102
Have you ever heard of that?

00:22:21.582 --> 00:22:22.782
I have not.

00:22:22.782 --> 00:22:24.463
Let me just interject and say this, please, please.

00:22:25.207 --> 00:22:26.593
I fly a lot, obviously.

00:22:26.593 --> 00:22:32.028
Just interject and say this you know I fly a lot, obviously.

00:22:32.028 --> 00:22:34.693
And, uh, when you're in the air and and I listen to air traffic control, well, you know, we've got a fixed wing.

00:22:34.693 --> 00:22:38.229
Whatever it is coming at you, they're about three miles ahead of you.

00:22:38.229 --> 00:22:41.436
Yes, sir, good luck in trying to see that with the naked eye.

00:22:41.436 --> 00:22:45.272
Yes, because an airplane goes through the air.

00:22:45.272 --> 00:22:47.837
Yes, and it's all about aerodynamics.

00:22:47.837 --> 00:22:48.846
Yes, the wings.

00:22:48.846 --> 00:22:50.232
You can't see the wings.

00:22:50.232 --> 00:22:53.452
The best that you're going to do is just see the nose of the airplane.

00:22:53.794 --> 00:22:55.277
Right, I didn't realize that, yeah.

00:22:55.807 --> 00:22:58.164
And it's the same thing with a motorcycle.

00:22:58.164 --> 00:23:00.711
We're all used to seeing an oncoming car.

00:23:00.711 --> 00:23:04.111
Car is big, oh yeah, you've got area in the front.

00:23:04.111 --> 00:23:12.134
Now add a setting sunset or a rising sunset and you've got a motorcycle coming at you Some big pillars on the car.

00:23:12.153 --> 00:23:13.626
You have a motorcycle coming at you.

00:23:14.107 --> 00:23:19.788
How many times have you had near misses because you couldn't see the motorcycle for whatever reason?

00:23:19.788 --> 00:23:23.772
Other traffic, oh my God, it's scary to think.

00:23:23.772 --> 00:23:34.339
I cannot even imagine living with myself if I were the person that was instrumental in having that motorcycle die or maimed.

00:23:34.339 --> 00:23:37.875
I've seen, as you know, I've seen some awful stuff.

00:23:38.204 --> 00:24:01.028
The other side of the coin, I see, is that it goes both ways, because you need to have the responsibility on the two-wheeler, because I've been in traffic where they've been zigzagging in between cars, in between the lanes, they, they scare people you know, when you're not used to doing that, and then they take off and running and you see them zip, and they're, they're miles ahead, but guess what they have to be eventually?

00:24:01.369 --> 00:24:04.557
that they will have a near fatal if not a fatal accident.

00:24:04.576 --> 00:24:06.971
You don't want to wish that on them, you just want them down.

00:24:07.171 --> 00:24:11.113
Well, I'm talking to a group of bikers and I may need your help, brother Mars.

00:24:11.113 --> 00:24:14.696
I mean, I'm going to talk to some bad bikers and I'm going to.

00:24:14.696 --> 00:24:15.326
This is going to be.

00:24:15.346 --> 00:24:16.410
Well, he'd be the man to take.

00:24:16.430 --> 00:24:19.073
Yeah, that's right, have you seen, look at them, Look at those arms.

00:24:19.073 --> 00:24:23.892
What I'm saying is those, there's tats.

00:24:23.892 --> 00:24:29.480
These guys, they're very concerned about their safety, but at the end of the day, they want to do the right thing too.

00:24:29.480 --> 00:24:34.436
So I'm going to talk to a group, a bike club, meeting tomorrow at 3 o'clock.

00:24:34.436 --> 00:24:43.994
The group is called Bikers Lives Matter, and we're going to be talking about just what you're saying not being silly on your bike and man, don't kill yourself.

00:24:44.244 --> 00:24:46.173
Help yourself and don't kill yourself.

00:24:46.173 --> 00:24:53.672
And what's not to say that they don't see them because they don't, and somebody's changing lanes or merging and all that it's usually not the biker that really messes up.

00:24:53.732 --> 00:24:54.193
I mean some.

00:24:54.193 --> 00:24:56.913
Do you see them out there on one wheel at 80 miles an hour?

00:24:56.913 --> 00:25:00.144
But, generally it's somebody popping them from the side.

00:25:00.464 --> 00:25:10.818
I like the one where you know let me pour them a drink out and you cock the door open and all of a sudden boom yep, that's happened there goes the motorcycle, the door and everything else that's bad.

00:25:10.818 --> 00:25:12.461
Let me ask you this and it's on.

00:25:12.580 --> 00:25:15.453
It's on my list of questions to ask, because you're always asking me stuff.

00:25:15.453 --> 00:25:18.509
Now it's time for me to ask you what, what is your thought?

00:25:18.509 --> 00:25:27.135
And from the safety aspect of the newer vehicle now, would you consider the newer vehicle safer now?

00:25:27.477 --> 00:25:32.673
absolutely yes, I agree absolutely 100 technology is our friend in that case.

00:25:32.794 --> 00:25:39.854
Yeah, yeah, technology, I mean it's almost uh impossible to get into a wreck by way of your own.

00:25:39.854 --> 00:25:45.431
I mean, I'm not saying impossible, I'm saying you know, lane assist, uh, and I can just go on and on and on.

00:25:45.471 --> 00:25:49.237
Yeah, on All of the sensors and the cameras.

00:25:49.237 --> 00:25:56.278
There's no reason for you as long as you put the damn cell phone down pay attention to where you're going.

00:25:56.345 --> 00:26:05.355
All right, second question on my list for you and I'm done with my questions what is your thought on I've got to throw it out there the self-driving vehicles.

00:26:05.916 --> 00:26:06.818
Absolutely not.

00:26:06.818 --> 00:26:16.856
It will be one day, but today absolutely not, I don't think so there is a place and a purpose for that, but it's not one on the highway.

00:26:16.856 --> 00:26:24.805
And number two is I just don't think that the infrastructure is there, and neither is the technology with the vehicles themselves.

00:26:24.884 --> 00:26:28.313
Well, they do have some running in certain segments of Texas.

00:26:28.313 --> 00:26:30.317
Oh yeah in a certain blocked area.

00:26:30.376 --> 00:26:36.571
Yes, yes, but that's very specific for that technology because, like don said, it's the infrastructure is the problem.

00:26:36.571 --> 00:26:42.916
The technology's there, it can see the curbs and it can see the streets, but it doesn't understand whenever there's now where my curb go.

00:26:43.085 --> 00:26:58.049
Yes, well, I will say this that story out of San Francisco where all of the autonomous cars come together at one intersection and they can't get by themselves and they're all jammed up there Absolutely nuts.

00:26:58.049 --> 00:27:01.112
Now we need to let that go a little bit further.

00:27:01.112 --> 00:27:02.296
It's not ready yet.

00:27:02.296 --> 00:27:03.430
It's kind of like EVs.

00:27:03.430 --> 00:27:09.796
Three and a half hours over three days trying to find a working fast charging station.

00:27:09.796 --> 00:27:13.071
You know where I wind up going, where Passa Get Down Dina.

00:27:13.265 --> 00:27:14.411
Passa Get Down Dina.

00:27:14.905 --> 00:27:15.888
You're familiar with them.

00:27:15.888 --> 00:27:17.114
I am very familiar, yeah.

00:27:17.114 --> 00:27:25.244
So over there at Spencer Highway, that's where I found it and Red Bluff, behind a Chase Motor Bank.

00:27:25.325 --> 00:27:26.446
That's something to consider.

00:27:26.567 --> 00:27:28.489
There is that One thing about in real time.

00:27:28.528 --> 00:27:31.011
you guys don't bash, but I will say that.

00:27:31.032 --> 00:27:32.575
No bashing.

00:27:32.595 --> 00:27:34.376
That's inconvenient.

00:27:34.396 --> 00:27:35.018
That's facts.

00:27:35.018 --> 00:27:35.438
That's true.

00:27:35.438 --> 00:27:36.318
That's not bashing.

00:27:36.359 --> 00:27:36.920
That's just facts.

00:27:36.920 --> 00:27:37.641
Let me tell you something?

00:27:37.684 --> 00:27:45.479
The reason that they took down Gillies, besides the fire, is because that area of town doesn't need to have a Gillies in it.

00:27:45.479 --> 00:27:49.569
Yeah, yeah, doesn't need to have a Gillies in it.

00:27:49.569 --> 00:27:50.032
Yeah, it's pretty rough.

00:27:50.032 --> 00:27:50.897
The streets look great.

00:27:50.897 --> 00:27:52.569
They've improved all that over there.

00:27:52.569 --> 00:27:58.931
Back in the day it was a two-lane asphalt road and a shell parking lot.

00:27:59.765 --> 00:28:00.910
You know they got to trade the truth.

00:28:00.910 --> 00:28:01.814
We got to don the truth.

00:28:01.814 --> 00:28:02.336
That's right.

00:28:04.028 --> 00:28:07.347
Don't tell the truth, steven, it is such a wonderful surprise.

00:28:07.347 --> 00:28:08.028
Thank you very much.

00:28:08.028 --> 00:28:08.450
That's it, Stephen.

00:28:08.450 --> 00:28:09.271
It is such a wonderful surprise.

00:28:09.271 --> 00:28:09.854
Thank you very much.

00:28:09.854 --> 00:28:10.615
We appreciate it.

00:28:11.518 --> 00:28:12.179
Anytime.

00:28:12.179 --> 00:28:15.594
Brother Morris calls me all the time he tries to set something up.

00:28:15.594 --> 00:28:16.950
But I asked him a favor.

00:28:16.950 --> 00:28:20.013
I said, man, can I come on spread a little message?

00:28:20.013 --> 00:28:21.150
You know what I want you to do.

00:28:21.384 --> 00:28:22.750
I want you to do us a favor.

00:28:23.184 --> 00:28:24.666
No, I'm not taking him with you, not with me.

00:28:24.666 --> 00:28:25.468
No, I'm not taking him with you.

00:28:25.468 --> 00:28:26.068
No, no, no, with me, no.

00:28:26.128 --> 00:28:29.875
But go over there and talk to those guys at God's Garage and I want you to meet Brad Thompson.

00:28:29.974 --> 00:28:31.457
He's right there, right there, oh there, he is there.

00:28:31.457 --> 00:28:32.679
He is Right there, okay.

00:28:32.719 --> 00:28:32.940
Meet.

00:28:32.960 --> 00:28:36.070

00:28:36.070 --> 00:28:36.813

00:28:36.952 --> 00:28:37.935
